Expanded Metal Mesh for Industrial & Architectural Applications
Standard expanded metal, also known as raised expanded metal, is produced by mechanically slitting and stretching metal sheet or coil into a continuous open pattern. The finished sheet is lighter than the original solid sheet while retaining a strong, rigid structure.
Raised expanded metal also provides useful slip resistance, making it suitable for a broad range of industrial and architectural applications. AlliedMesh can supply galvanized and other finishes, with opening sizes, strand dimensions, sheet sizes, and patterns selected according to project requirements.
Key Advantages
AlliedMesh can develop custom dies and opening patterns for project-specific requirements.
Expanded Metal Mesh Production — Slitting and Expanding
How Expanded Metal Mesh Is Made
Expanded metal mesh is manufactured from a solid sheet or coil of metal, commonly carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum, depending on the intended application. The material is slit and stretched through a specialized expanding process to create a continuous mesh structure with interconnected strands and open spaces.
Metal Sheet Selection
Metal sheet or coil is selected according to the required material, thickness, finish and application. Galvanized steel is commonly used where a zinc-coated surface is required.
Slitting and Expanding
Specialized machinery slits and stretches the metal sheet to form interconnected strands and openings. The mesh pattern and dimensions depend on the selected tooling and specifications.
Raised or Flattened Mesh
The expanded sheet normally has a raised three-dimensional surface. An additional flattening process can be used when a flatter surface is required for the intended application.
Cutting and Inspection
The mesh is cut to the required sheet dimensions and checked against agreed specifications, including opening dimensions, strand width, sheet thickness and surface condition.
